This is a most interesting cross between an Imperial German Air Service squadron’s gong and an intricate piece of trench art. There is an easel-like prop on the reverse to securely hold up the frame. There is a place to slip in a CDV from the reverse. So this frame could have been used to display a photo by any soldier in one of these units, or his loved ones back home. ![]() Jäger Bataillone, Machine Gun Abteilungs, Eisenbahn-Bataillone, Telegraphen-Bataillone, Kraftfahr Bataillone, Luftschiffer Bataillone, and Flieger-Bataillone all used the tschako. ![]() While only half of the tschako is actually showing, if you look closely enough you can see one of the two lions that would have appeared on a Bavarian headpiece. Nestled between some leaves is a tschako in profile, complete with field badge. At the very bottom of the frame is what appears to be a soldier’s pack with a pair of crossed rifles. In the center at the top of the frame is a large cutout Wittelsbach Crown. The checkerboard area, which would have been blue and white, is in place with a crown over each banner. The frame area features twin unfurled banners of Bavaria. This is a really attractive photo frame that would have been used to honor a Bavarian soldier.
